Set within Cambridge, Waikato - our Thornton Road new build responds to both its semi-rural surroundings and the relaxed lifestyle of its owners. The brief called for a home that felt grounded and enduring, while subtly weaving together a clean, contemporary language with softened Mediterranean influences. A restrained, almost brutalist approach underpins the design, allowing solid forms and honest materials to define the home’s character.
The material palette leans into rich, textural contrasts with burnished concrete flooring, deep timber grains, and matte black accents, creating a sense of weight and permanence. Designers Sophia Cole and Kate Bradley, working from the Hamilton studio, developed a carefully balanced scheme that introduces moments of drama through the living spaces and powder room, while maintaining warmth and comfort within the bedrooms and bathrooms. Considered detailing, from bespoke cabinetry to refined lighting, adds depth and sophistication without detracting from the architectural clarity.
Spatial planning was integral to the outcome, with open-plan living areas designed to balance connection and retreat. The kitchen anchors the home as a sculptural and functional centrepiece, seamlessly linking to dining and outdoor spaces to support effortless entertaining.
Throughout, a disciplined approach to restraint and cohesion ensures each element feels intentional. The result is a home that is both elevated and liveable. It is grounded in its Cambridge setting and thoughtfully attuned to the rhythms of everyday life.
